The Nature Center Aide volunteer provides a warm welcome and useful information to our visitors about exhibits, activities, and more. Volunteers engage with visitors and inspire visitors to explore the Cypress Swamp exhibits and trails. Nature Center Aides provide assistance to Division staff. Shifts of less than the full 7 hours can be arranged upon request.
Responsibilities Include:
- Opening and preparing the Nature Center to receive visitors (if an opening volunteer).
- Greeting visitors and providing information and assistance.
- Providing information about the Nature Center and trails
- Counting visitors and recording data.
- Answering the phone, providing information, and taking messages.
- Securing and closing the Nature Center (if a closing volunteer)
Skills Required
- Customer skills
- Ability to work independently
Physical Demands
Requires long periods of standing, frequent walking indoors, repeated bending, crouching, stooping, stretching or reaching; recurring lifting of objects up to 49 pounds.
Other Duties, Depending on Interests
- Feeding captive animals after training by staff
- Leading small groups on tours of the Nature Center
- Assisting with other clerical duties
- Working on independent projects such as displays, brochures, articles, web site management
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years old
- A background check is required
Required Training
- Orientation of the facility by staff or trained volunteer
- Shadowing (on-the-job) training
- Cash handling procedures
- Animal care duties
- Other training as needed (web site, data management)
