Identifying Observations: City Nature Challenge 2020

Calendar Happens On Apr 29, 2020
Time 7-9
Expired

Description

Although the City Nature Challenge collection weekend is over, the new Challenge is to identify all of the 24,606 observations.

Whether you are a novice or expert naturalist, you can help identify many of the CNC-DC finds that are missing ID’s! Join DC area iNatters and learn tips & tricks on species identifications, as well as using iNaturalist desktop functions to play to your own natural history strengths (even if you feel you have none!)

How to Participate

Register in advance for this meeting:
https://tnc.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMofumuqzwtHdU0eZdloffvU0aW2bMVQ8AN
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting

ID Party suggestions:

  • Join Zoom on a computer, laptop, or tablet for making identifications and referring to Google Docs, and for sharing your screen
  • Filter on one genus or species you know well, to quickly move observations up to research grade.
  • Search for observations identified as “plants” or “vascular plants,”  and refine the ID if you can.
  • Don’t guess beyond what you know!  Don’t agree with a species identification unless you can confidently identify it also.

What is the City Nature Challenge?

We know COVID-19 is affecting many of our CNC participants, some much more than others. After much thinking, we have decided to keep the Global CNC event scheduled for April 24-27 (observations) and April 28-May 3 (identifications). Calvert County is part of the City Nature Challenge of the Washington DC region. However, we will be making some significant modifications:

This year’s City Nature Challenge is no longer a competition. We want to embrace the collaborative aspect of the CNC this year and the healing power of nature to allow people to document their local biodiversity in whatever way they can.
