Learn to teach Calvert County's 3rd graders about the needs of diamond backed terrapins and how they fit in to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem.
Prior to responding to the Terrapins CHESPAX teaching volunteer opportunity, all new volunteers must undergoing an orientation and at least 2 shadow days. All Terrapins programs are held at Flag Ponds Nature Park.
Contact naturalist Tania Gale at Tania.gale@calvertcountymd.gov if interested first. The qualifications below MUST be completed before shadowing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must successfully complete a Calvert County Public Schools background check and meet with CHESPAX staff to have their ID verified. This must be completed each school year. Start at the school website: Become a Volunteer - Calvert County Public School District (calvertnet.k12.md.us) No fingerprinting is required. Select "Field Trip Chaperone" when asked.
- New volunteers must meet with the program leader (Tania Gale) for a new volunteer orientation.
Maintaining Qualifications:
- You must volunteer with a CHESPAX Terrapins fieldtrip at least once in a 2-week time period. If it has been more than 2 weeks since you have volunteered, you may need to attend another observation day as a refresher.
Preregistration is required - please sign up a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Walk-ins will not be accepted.
