Volunteer: 2026 CHESPAX Terrapins Program

Teach Calvert County's 3rd graders about the needs of diamond backed terrapins and their importance in the Chesapeake Bay area.  All Terrapins programs are held at Flag Ponds Nature Park.  Volunteer shift is approximately from 9:15-1:45.  We ask that volunteers commit to teaching at least once day every 2 weeks, more frequently is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Must be at least 18 years old. Must successfully complete a Calvert County Public Schools background check and meet with CHESPAX staff to have your ID verified. This must be completed each school year. Start at the school website: Become a Volunteer - Calvert County Public School District (calvertnet.k12.md.us) No fingerprinting is required. Select "Field Trip Chaperone" when asked. Must observe a minimum of two CHESPAX Terrapins program shadowing days before you can teach a group on your own. New volunteers must meet with the program leader (Tania Gale) for a new volunteer orientation. Email Tania Gale (tania.gale@calvertcountymd.gov) to schedule.

Maintaining Qualifications: 

You must volunteer with a CHESPAX Terrapins fieldtrip at least once in a 2-week time period.  If it has been more than 2 weeks since you have volunteered, you may need to attend another observation day as a refresher.

To become a Qualified Volunteer, please contact Tania Gale to schedule an orientation and two observation days.

Preregistration is required. Please sign up a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

Assist a naturalist in teaching Homeschoolers ages 4-12.  Generally about half the program is inside and half the program is outside.

These groups require training beyond our general training for a CHESPAX program and have a different theme each month.  Programs are at Flag Ponds Nature Park. Times listed are those for the volunteer to arrive and depart. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

New volunteers must meet with the program leader (Kim Curren) for a new volunteer orientation  Successfully complete a CCPR background check: Background Checks | Calvert County, MD - Official Website (calvertcountymd.gov)     You will need to upload a photo of a government-issued ID during this online process, select "other" when asked for your team name. Volunteers must attend the Education Volunteer orientation Volunteers must observe a minimum of one homeschool day (both AM and PM sessions) before they can respond

Maintaining Qualifications: you must volunteer with a homeschool day least once in a 2-month time period.  If it has been more than 2 months since you have volunteered, you will need to attend another observation day as a refresher

The CCPR background check must be renewed annually
