Who We Are

The Winter Raptor Research Program studies the over-wintering population of American Kestrels, Red Shouldered Hawks and Red Tailed Hawks through standard road trapping and banding protocols.
Our data are submitted to the Bird Banding Lab for use by many researchers.

What We Do

Calvert Stewards assist the Naturalists in capturing, banding and releasing hawks and falcons.
The project occurs January through March and is weather dependent. Specific opportunities by date will be listed if practical, actual dates and times may not be known until 24-48 hours before the opportunity.

Interested volunteers should Respond to the Winter Banding Response Team opportunity to receive notices of upcoming banding dates.

The goals of this project:
• Gain a better understanding of the number of hawks and falcons using our area as a wintering ground.
• Discover where hawks and falcons wintering in our area go during the breeding season.
• Through recaptures learn which birds are using the same wintering grounds year after year
